Stephan Schafer started playing the clarinet at the age
of 9, saxophone at the age of 14. Born and raised in Germany
he studied classical saxophone at the Meistersingerkonservatorium
in Nuremburg from 1988 to 1994. During that time he performed
as a freelancing musician with various bands, Chamber Music
Ensembles and Big Bands.
In 1994 he migrated to Sydney, where he teaches Saxophone
at Shore Grammar School in North Sydney and works as a freelancing
musician.
He has performed with James Morrison, Emma Pask, Don Burrows,
George Golla, Monica Trapaga, Barbara Morrison, Ian Cooper,
Frank Bennet and Jimmy Barnes.
He also runs his own Jazz Sextet "Unit 6" and
the Saxophone Quartet " The Sydney Saxophone Syndicate".
