John Morrison

Sydney 2000 Olympic Opening Ceremony

YEP - that was us. The creative director of the welcome segment, Ignatius Jones, decided an Australian fanfare should have a "larrikin" element to it and felt a little bit of swing would do the trick. He came straight to us and Swing City was the big band you saw at the very top of the opening ceremony.

James Morrison led us in the piece he had written for the occasion which the TV commentator gave the title - "the swingingest fanfare ever".

What a gig!

For this special event the band was increased to a 32 piece group and after many months of rehearsal all the various segments were put together for the biggest of big bands. James decided to call the piece "Olympic Fanfare" (rather than the alternative title of "Kjumoresm Octonal Suite").

The music heralded the beginning of the nights entertainment and ushered in the Governor General. Following this we joined Human Nature, Julie Anthony and the Sydney Symphony orchestra in the Australian National Anthem.

In addition to the opening ceremony, Swing City played at many of the Olympic "Live" sites during the olympic period. The Jazz Legends concert was the highlight of these and 40,000 people in the domain swung to the beat of Swing City with Australia's great jazz legends.

In a 16 day period the band played "LIVE" to 380,000 people in Sydney.

PROMOTORS NOTE: Swing City is available for bookings in full Olympic dress and staging.
